Perkeo of Heidelberg is the town's unofficial mascot. Perkeo was actually his nickname, derived from his usual response of "perché no" (Italian) to an offer of another drink. He was a favorite of the Elector Palatine Charles III Philip and his primary job was guardian of the Great Heidelberg Tun, a 58,000 gallon wine cask (really!) He was reputed to have drunk gallons of wine each day. Wine was weaker then.
